Police Activity Reports POLICE "QUALITY OF LIFE" patrols - The Quality of Life Unit was reactivated on a trial basis in August of 2010 after I approached Chief Robert Oches and requested that we form a unit that would consist of officers from the Patrol Division who would be assigned to the Detective Bureau on a temporary basis and would be utilized to aggressively identify and arrests those offenders responsible for committing offenses that affect the “Quality of Life” of our residents.
Chief Oches assigned two patrol officers to the Detective Bureau on a monthly rotation in order to address these issues. The unit was in operation for three months and was then temporarily suspended throughout the winter months. The unit was reactivated in June of 2011. The chief has agreed to continue with the program due to its excellent results.
The Quality of Life Unit has so far consisted of nine, two man teams. The unit is, to date, responsible for the arrests of over 180 subjects for such offenses as narcotics, burglaries, receiving stolen property, warrants and other criminal activity. Officers assigned to the unit are also responsible for, but not inclusive of, capturing a fugitive wanted by the state of Florida, have arrested one of the biggest dealers of Oxycodone in the Bayshore area, have executed a search warrant and have purchased narcotics from drug dealers.
The officers have also assisted the Detective Bureau with warrant sweeps, Alcohol Beverage Control Inspections and the investigation of the Homicide that occurred in November and have supplemented the Detective Bureau's manpower during other investigations. One such investigation resulted in the apprehension of a subject for stealing luxury motor vehicles throughout the area and the recovery of four of the stolen vehicles.
The unit is also responsible for seizing three vehicles used in the commission of crimes and over $20,000.00 in cash that was proceeds of criminal activity. The teams have also seized a variety of narcotics with a street value worth tens of thousands of dollars.
The Quality of Life Unit consists of officers from the Patrol Bureau who are temporarily assigned to the plain clothes detail in the Detective Bureau. It is a joint operation between both bureaus. The unit uses Detective Bureau vehicles for their assignments and has access to police canines if needed. There is no budget set aside exclusively for the unit and the only cost that the township incurs is the officer's regular salaries. The unit is very cost effective and has outstanding results.
